Vietnam seeks to import more coal from Australia to avert power shortage

 BORNews -Vietnam is seeking to import more coal from Australia to ease a shortage of the fossil fuel for electricity production, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on the afternoon of April Fools.

The meeting took place amid Vietnam is looking for more sources of imports to ensure enough coal for domestic electricity production.

At the meeting, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien said that the world demand for coal is increasing rapidly during the post-COVID-19 economic recovery period.

Rapidly increasing demand, broken transport chains occurred locally in many places, causing many difficulties for coal supply for electricity production of many countries around the world.

The Minister of Industry and Trade highly appreciated Australia's coal mining and export capacity (up to more than 200 million tons of coal/year with export value of about 40 billion USD/year).

Therefore, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien asked the Australian Ambassador to assist in connecting Australian suppliers with state-owned corporations of Vietnam such as Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Group, Dong Bac Corporation, Vietnam Electricity Corporation to supply about 5 million tons of coal each year for electricity production in Vietnam.

Leaders of the Ministry of Industry and Trade also suggested the Australian Ambassador to immediately organize a meeting between businesses and management agencies of the two sides to soon agree on coal trading contracts, bringing coal shipments from Australia to Vietnam this April.

In addition to providing a stable and good quality coal volume, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also noted and suggested that Australia consider and supply coal to Vietnam at a reasonable price to keep the cost of electricity production at an appropriate level , ensuring the goal of sufficient electricity for production and ensuring the social security of Vietnam.

In response the request of the leader of Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ambassador Robyn Mudie affirmed that Australia has enough production, mining, processing, technology and infrastructure capacity to supply coal to Vietnam.

The Australian Ambassador said that she would immediately transfer Minister Nguyen Hong Dien's request back home and immediately organize a meeting between the management agencies, coal suppliers and importers of the two countries as requested by the Vietnamese side.
